    PREPARATION MEETING FOR THE UPCOMING EVENT – HIGHER EDUCATION WEEK 2023

    Today we had a meeting with the the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training – Zanzibar, the main agenda of that meeting was about the preparation for the upcoming event – HIGHER EDUCATION WEEK 2023 that is expected to be conducted on August, 2023 in Shaa Allah.

    The meeting was attended with representatives from several academic institutions.

    HIGHER EDUCATION WEEK is the national event hosted by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training – Zanzibar with aim of creating awareness for the youths from secondary schools and community in general who are expecting to pursue higher studies in local and international universities.

    On other hand, it is the perfect opportunity for the academic institutions to market and promote their institutions too.

    The Best Paper Award and the Best Student Paper Award (both valued at US $100 or equivalent) will be conferred at the conference. To qualify for the awards, the author must submit a full paper that will be presented at the conference.

    IOU Masters programs granted official permission by NAQAA

    National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), the official regulatory body in The Gambia, has granted permission to the International Open University (IOU) to conduct the following Masters programs for a year:

    • Master of Science in Islamic Economic Banking and Finance (MSc IEBF)
    • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
    • Master of Education (MEd)
    • Master of Arts in Arabic Language Studies – Coursework (MA ALS-Coursework)
    • Master of Arts in Arabic Language Studies – Research (MA ALS- Research)

    Another milestone for MIA

    Thanks to Allah, we have reached a new milestone. This Morning, we have received an accreditation certificate, that grant MIA to run our center and even offering short courses too.

    As for now, Moyo Islamic Academy is official registered with the Department of Alternative Learning and Adult Education under the Education Act of 1982 as a Continuing Education Center with the registration number PTC/P/008.

    Doctorate Degree Honoris Causa conferred upon His Excellency, President Adama Barrow

    The President of the Republic of the Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow, was robed on Thursday, 20 April 2023, in a solemn ceremony held at the State House in the President’s office by Professor Cherno Omar Barry, the Vice-Chancellor of the International Open University.

    It may be recalled that at the ninth IOU Convocation ceremony held on 28 February, 2023, His Excellency President Adama Barrow was conferred the award of a Doctorate Degree Honoris Causa by the International Open University in recognition of his distinguished services for the promotion of education, particularly in decentralizing higher education and TVET. Unfortunately, President Barrow could not attend the ceremony but was well-represented by the Minister of Public Service, Honorable Babucarr Bouy.

    The IOU recognizes President Adama Barrow’s policies that have resulted in tremendous strides in the education sector in The Gambia, from increasing access to secondary education to increasing the budget to accommodate marginalized students, particularly in rural Gambia.

    President Barrow introduced various initiatives, including launching the National Islamic Education Strategy in July 2019. The strategy focuses on providing access to quality Quranic and Islamic education to all Gambians, regardless of their gender, social background, or income level. The policies aim to improve the management of madrassas, build up the skills of teachers and administrators, and ensure that all madrassas have access to adequate resources, such as textbooks and other learning tools. President Barrow has also increased government funding for madrassas by allocating funds to help build new schools, pay teachers’ salaries, and give textbooks and other school supplies.

    The International Open University is the first of its kind in The Gambia, as it is the only university that provides online education to Gambian citizens and residents around the country. In response to President Barrow’s vision for every Gambian eligible for university education, especially the underprivileged, being accorded the opportunity to access quality higher education, the Founder-Chancellor of the International Open University, Prof Dr Bilal Philips, recently offered 1,000 scholarships dedicated to His Excellency.

    The Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa awarded by the IOU commemorates President Barrow’s commitment to education heralding a new wave of well-educated, highly skilled workers that will help usher in a new Gambia that is
    prosperous and progressive. Following the brief robing ceremony, Professor Barry emphasized the need to partner with the government to ensure every deserving Gambian gets a chance to post-secondary education in an affordable, accessible and flexible way. He is convinced that the IOU has a significant role in that regard.

    Zakatul Fitr ni nini katika Uislamu?

    Zakat ul Fitr ni sadaka ya chakula ambayo lazima itolewe kabla ya sala ya Eid, kabla ya mwisho wa mwezi wa Ramadhani, kwa ajili ya upendo wa Mwenyezi Mungu.

     

    Zakat Fitr ni kiasi gani?Kiasi cha chini kabisa ni sa` moja (mikono minne iliyojaa mikono miwili) ya chakula, nafaka au matunda yaliyokaushwa kwa kila mwanafamilia. Hesabu hii inatokana na riwaya ya Ibn Umar kwamba Mtume aliifanya Zakaatul-Fitwr kuwa ya lazima na kulipwa kwa sa` ya tende kavu au sa` ya shayiri.

     

    Nani anatakiwa kulipa Zakat al-Fitr?Muislamu yeyote ambaye ana chakula kinachozidi mahitaji yake lazima alipe Zakat ul Fitr (Fitrana). Tofauti na Zakat, ni wajibu kwa kila mtu katika nyumba yake. Kwa hiyo, mkuu wa kaya, au wazazi na walezi, wanaweza kulipa kwa niaba ya washiriki wengine wa familia.

     

    Nani analipa Zakat al-Fitr mume au mke?Hanafi (na Zahiri) wanaamini kwamba wajibu wa mtu binafsi wa malipo yake ni pamoja na wanawake wa Kiislamu, walioolewa au wasioolewa, kutokana na mali zao wenyewe. Shule nyingine za kisheria zinawataka waume kulipa Zakat al-Fitr kwa niaba ya wake zao Waislamu.

     

    Nani asiyetoa Zakat al-Fitr?Kwa ujumla, makundi manne ya watu hawalipi Zakat-sadaka zinazohitajika kila mwaka kwa Waislamu: maskini, maskini, wenye madeni, na wasio huru.

     

    Sheria za Zakat ni zipi?Watu binafsi lazima wafikie kizingiti fulani kinachojulikana kama nisab ili kuhitimu kupata zakat kila mwaka wa mwandamo. Hii imewekwa kwa thamani ya gramu 87.48 za dhahabu au gramu 612.36 za fedha. Watu ambao mali yao inazidi thamani ya kiasi hiki lazima walipe 2.5% ya thamani ya mali yao katika zakat.

     

    Nani Hawezi kuchukua Zaka?Mpokeaji lazima asiwe wa familia yako ya karibu; mwenzi wako, watoto, wazazi na babu zako hawawezi kupokea zakat yako. Jamaa wengine, hata hivyo, wanaweza kupokea zakat yako. Mpokeaji asiwe Hashimi, dhuria wa Mtume (saw).

     

    Je, ninaweza kutoa Zaka kwa mume wangu ambaye ana deni?Ndiyo. Qur’an inawabainisha waziwazi “waliodaiwa” kuwa ni sehemu ya Sita kati ya Makundi Nane ya watu wanaostahiki Zakat (tazama Surat Al-Tawbah, 9:60).
