IOU students from Zanzibar eligible for interest-free loans from ZHESLB

Students from Zanzibar registered with the International Open University (IOU) can now be included among the beneficiaries of interest-free loans from the Zanzibar Higher Education Students Loans Board (ZHESLB).

ZHESLB was established through Act No. 3 of 2011 and started operations in August 2011 as an autonomous institution. The Board initiated payment and repayment of Higher Education loans from graduate students and reports to the Minister of Education in Zanzibar.

In 2024, an Act was passed to repeal the Zanzibar Higher Education Loans Board Act, no. 3 of 2011 and enact the Zanzibar Higher Education Students’ Loans board (ZHESLB) Act to provide financial assistance to students and other related matters. This Act is cited as the Zanzibar Higher Education Students’ Loans Board Act No. 2 of 2024 and started operations on March 2024.

ZHESLB has approved and listed the International Open University (IOU) as one of the overseas academic institutions, where its students will benefit from ZHESLB-approved diploma/Associate Degree to Ph.D. levels.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR IOU STUDENTS

Applicant be Zanzibaris and must have Zanzibar ID
Applicant must have a No Objection Certificate from TCU
O-LEVEL, A-Level Student number or AVN from NACTE

Moyo Islamic Academy (MIA) and the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in academic matters particularly on examination affairs.

This groundbreaking partnership intends to establish academic cooperation and partnership in examination supervision and establishment of MIA Satellite Examination Centers in all regional/coordinating centers owned by OUT to be used by MIA for its examinations.

The Open University of Tanzania established by an act of the Parliament No. 17 of 1992 and later re-accredited under the University Act No. 7 of 2005 through the Open University Charter and Rules of 2007 and that its head office in Dar-Es-Salaam which offers all its educational Programs through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Mode WHILE on other hand, Moyo Islamic Academy established under The Companies Act No 15 of 2013 (laws of Zanzibar) and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training – Zanzibar under the Department of Alternative Learning and Adult Education has granted a license to operate as Continuing Education Center and that its head office in South Pemba which is engaging in carry out all activities through teaching and learning, research, consultancy, advisory, technical services, publications and extensions activities to promote the advancement and unification of knowledge and theology in arts, humanities, science and technology etc by infusing islamic values and principles in their broadest sense.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in MIA’s commitment to advancing education and fostering accessibility to everyone, regardless of location or background and growth of Open Distance and electronic Learning (ODeL) in the region.

As for our students, this partnership gives them an opportunity during the exams session to attempt their exams at any regional/coordinating centers owned by OUT in any region. This means that there is no need any more to be in Pemba so as to be able to do exams, if a student is on vacation, office duties etc , he/she can attempt exams at any of the regional/coordinating centers owned by OUT.
